Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old environmental activist from Sweden, left the U.S. and sailed across the Atlantic, a trip that spanned three weeks, to arrive on the Iberian Peninsula in time for the COP25, the United Nations climate conference in Madrid, Spain.
Climate change has become the main threat and the greatest environmental, ecological, and social challenge that the human race and world faces in the 21st century. As a global predicament, the fight against climate change requires multilateral review by the United Nations.
The UN Climate Change Conference COP 25 (2 – 13 December 2019) will take place under the Presidency of the Government of Chile with logistical support from the Government of Spain. The President for the conference is Ms. Carolina Schmidt, Minister of Environment of Chile.
Originally, the 25th Conference of the Parties was going to be held in Santiago, Chile but because of the strong social movements currently occurring in Chile, Spain offered to host the conference. Regardless, Chile plays a central role in the international negotiations and coordination of the Conference. Over 60 Heads of State and close to 25,000 visitors from around 200 countries are expected to participate in the event.
The conference’s focus is to design the critical steps in the UN climate change process. A key objective is to complete full operationalization of the Paris Climate Change Agreement following the agreement last year at the COP24 in Poland.
MADRID (AP) — Climate activist Greta Thunberg has arrived by train in Madrid, where a global U.N.-sponsored climate change conference is underway. The Swedish teen is scheduled to join thousands of other young people later on Friday in a march to demand negotiators and politicians take real action in tackling the planet’s rising temperatures.
Thunberg, who prefers low-carbon transportation in her trips, traveled overnight from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, where she arrived earlier this week after sailing across the Atlantic Ocean from the United States by catamaran.
