Warming scents of fresh baked goods make a home feel cozy. But many commercial air fresheners that promise these benefits contain harmful chemicals, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs.) Instead of using dangerous synthetic scents, try this neat trick to make your home smell delicious.
Delight in the intoxicating smells of citrus and cinnamon with this easy way to naturally scent your home. Photo By Kirsten Hudson.
What you’ll need:
Cinnamon
Nutmeg
Peels of citrus fruits (oranges, lemons or grapefruits)
Saucepot
Before tossing the peels of your citrus fruits into the compost bin, get one last use out of them to make your home smell like fresh baked cookies.
Directions:
Combine the fruit peels along with a few dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg into a saucepot. Fill the saucepot with about one to two inches of water. Place the mixture onto the stove and turn the heat to high.
After the mixture boils, it will emit an intoxicating scent of cinnamon and citrus. Let the mixture boil and waft out delicious smells as long as you want. Just make sure to keep refilling the water as it evaporates. Once off the stove, the fragrance lasts about one to two hours. Enjoy!
