The segments in bamboo have a thick waterproof membrane that separates the chambers. Cut below them for a closed bottom, and above them for an open top. Lightly sand inside and out. Beeswax or orange oil can be applied for a nice finish.

Things to do with bamboo

Bamboo is a miraculous plant. Growing up to 1 foot a day, it is strong, pliable, and water-proof. And did we mention beautiful? Here we cut bamboo to bring out its inner beauty and practicality. Cut crosswise, it makes lovely bud vases; cut lengthwise, it creates the most beguiling little bathroom organizers.

A hand saw does the cross cuts with ease. Ask a woodworker or cabinetmaker to make the lengthwise cuts with a band or table saw. Skinny (1- to 2- inch diameter) bamboo is available at hardware and garden centers. We found our nice, fat 3- to 4- inch bamboo on the web at a great natural craft source: looseends.com. They even had split bamboo. A few swipes with the sandpaper to soften the edges is all these willowy beauties need to add a hint of the rainforest to your bathroom.
