As aid continues to flow into Haiti following the January 12 earthquake, individuals and organizations are working to rebuild Port-au-Prince into a functioning capital city again.
The U.S. Green Building Council has announced that it is developing plans to launch a green rebuilding effort in Haiti. The USGBC will draw on its experiences rebuilding New Orleans and Greensburg, Kansas, to help rebuild in Haiti.
Though no specific reconstruction plans have yet been announced, various organizations are already making an effort to use sustainable resources to aid the Haitians. The Solar Electric Light Fund (SELF) is powering health clinics with solar energy by teaming up with Partners in Health (PIH) to install solar panels on health centers that traditionally have relied on diesel-powered generators.
The USGBC, SELF and PIH are all accepting donations for Haiti through their websites.
