The Solar Decathlon, a biyearly competition sponsored by the U.S Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, challenges collegiate teams to design and build attractive, energy-efficient, solar-powered homes. The 2005 trophy went to University of Colorado architecture and engineering students for an 800-square-foot solar home constructed of recycled, low-toxicity and agriculturally based materials that minimize use of petroleum products. The winning house, detailed here, soon will find a home in the Prospect New Urbanist community in Longmont, Colorado.
