In this episode of Mother Earth News and Friends, we discuss food sensitivities vs allergies. Today’s topic is centered around gluten but rabbit trails into an informative conversation over sensitivities in general.
Hannah Kincaid is the group editor of wellness and gardening for Ogden Publications. She spends her spare time studying and growing native medicinal plants, maintaining a large heirloom vegetable and cut-flower garden, and practicing yoga. Hannah prefers craft beer over wine, Steinbeck over Hemingway, and sunflowers over roses. In this episode Hannah discusses her own journey with food sensitivities.
Deborah Niemann is a homesteader, writer, and self-sufficiency expert. In 2002, she moved her family from the Chicago suburbs to a 32-acre parcel on a creek in the middle of nowhere. Together, they built their own home and began growing the majority of their own food. Sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, and turkeys supply meat, eggs, and dairy products, while a garden and fruit trees provide produce. During this time she also started a the rigorous process of identifying the source of her food sensitivities.
Victoria Redhed Miller grew up in Seattle and now lives with her husband, David, on their off-grid farm in the Olympic Mountain foothills in NW Washington state. She speaks on several topics related to homesteading and self-reliance, at events around the country. She recently finished her book: From No-knead to Sourdough: A simpler approach to handmade bread. Since creating this book she has been opened up to the world of gluten and other sensitivities to the point that she created a presentation on the topic for the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR.
