Country Lore: Vertical Gardening

A New York couple uses these tipi frames as a simple yet effective way of vertical gardening.

My husband and I leaned large poles against each other tipi-style, then bound them at the top with natural jute twine, to do some vertical gardening within our garden.

We made three tipis and grew birdhouse gourds on one, cucumbers on another, and pole beans on the third. I trained them to work up the poles by using the twine and gently wrapping the new growth to the poles.
