The author suggests using old socks as an inexpensive wrist protection against thorns when cutting back woodland brush.
I’m clearing woodland of vicious vine with double-edge
thorns that make bloody ribbons of exposed flesh. For
protection I wear heavy jeans stuffed into boots, a thick
shirt, leather gloves, and a tied-on wide-brim hat to
protect my face. My wrists still suffered, though, as I
reached out and up. So I cut off the foot sections of
worn-out socks as an inexpensive wrist protection against thorns. Works fine!
