Due to Mother’s inspiration, I built a tiny retreat out of scavenged rocks and recycled bottles on some land that I own in rural Kansas. Your magazine gave me the courage to just start building, even though I am a middle-aged woman with no previous building experience. At my day job I am a strolling violinist.
I built the retreat all by myself! The most beautiful part of my project was the roof: It’s made entirely out of recycled wine bottles laid on their sides with the open ends facing out. They are held in place by mortar. The bottles form a beautiful, sparkling dome, and make the roof “sing” in the strong Kansas winds.
