Holiday Happenings

Reader Contribution by Heidi Hunt

The holiday season Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice is traditionally filled with food, family, lights, songs and gifts. Over the years, as we are all well aware, the gift/commercial aspect of the season has overshadowed the more spiritual and reverent aspects of the holidays.

Some folks manage to buck the frenzy and share their gifts in a more personal way by serving dinner at the rescue mission, donating food and bedding to an animal shelter, or adopting a needy family. A brave few chuck the whole thing and take a trip to the tropics, basking in the warmth of the sun rather than the glow of a decorated tree.

Does your family celebrate the holiday season in a non-traditional, do-it-yourself way? If so, tell us about it in the comments section below.
