Mike McArthy, Telling the Story of Missouri and Arkansas’ Mountain Country

Background and Personal History: Mike McArthy of Photozarks grew up and attended school in Illinois, then moved to Missouri after college. He has been exploring, studying, photographing and writing about the Ozarks region for more than 20 years. A nationally published freelance photographer and writer, Mike has hundreds of thousands of photos of the region — from waterfalls and wildlife to rustic architecture — to his credit. His book,Historic Ozarks Mills, takes the reader on a tour of more than 25 old grist mills that still exist in the Ozarks region and includes full-color photos, histories, folklore and other stories, locations and a map.
Mike has had more than 30 front-cover shots published on magazines and books, as well as countless stock photos and dozens of articles included in those publications. He has one book out now and is working on two more books and a DVD slide show. His marketing company, called Photozarks, promotes the region and sells his award-winning work. Mike has written for The Ozarks Mountaineer Magazine, Missouri Life Magazine and many others. He says his work has been enjoyed on every continent in the world (“except for maybe Antarctica…”).
Current Projects: Mike is working on a book called Ozarks Ghost Towns and Forgotten Communities and an as-yet untitled photo book of Ozarks nature scenes, as well as a DVD slide show on the beauty of the Ozarks region and other projects.
Other Fun Facts: “There are almost 55,000 square miles of Ozarks. My goal is to get to each one of them at least once before it’s all over!”
