Lisa Marie Morgan, Natural Birth Doula
Name: Lisa Marie Morgan
Occupation: Birth Doula, Dancing for Birth™ Instructor
Place of Residence: Portland, Oregon
Background and Personal History: Lisa Marie attended her first birth at 13 years of age. It would be fourteen years before she attended another birth, that of her first child. Both experiences, while markedly different, impressed upon her that birth is a sacred experience of which women should be active participants.
In discussing her own birth stories with other women, Lisa Marie discovered that many women fear birth and do not enjoy or feel empowered by the experience of labor. She began work as a doula and childbirth educator to change that.
Ina May Gaskin, one of Lisa Marie’s birth heroes, says, “If a woman doesn’t look like a goddess in birth, someone isn’t treating her right.” Lisa Marie teaches women, dances with women, labors with women and writes for women in order that they will feel like the goddesses they are in birth.
Current Projects:
Dancing for Birth™: Lisa Marie teaches Dancing for Birth™ classes which combine the wisdom of traditional women’s dances with childbirth education. She would like to see the Dancing for Birth™ model of birth preparation become the gold standard and is working to make Dancing for Birth™ a household name.
Type 1 Diabetes and Birth: Mila, Lisa Marie’s daughter, has Type 1 Diabetes. In support of Mila’s future as a mother and of the thousands of women who face the challenge of living with Type 1 and birthing a baby, Lisa Marie advocates for Type 1 mommas in the medical system and brings them together to share their birth stories.
Other Fun Facts: After college, Lisa Marie spent two and a half years in the Republic of Moldova as a Peace Corps Volunteer. Upon returning to the U.S. she started a family and discovered how much she enjoys being pregnant and that she loves the labor process. When not following her obsession with all things birth, she likes to cook, eat, grow food and spend as much time outdoors as possible with her family. When she goes to bed at night, she dreams of the intentional community she wants to someday create with her birth center as the hub.
