Background and Personal History: Lisa began gardening while learning the art of cheese-making in France’s Pyrenees and maritime Alps and the Italian Appenines. In the cheese-makers’ kitchen gardens, she learned seed-saving on the home scale, how to cook from the garden, and to respect regionally-adapted heirlooms. Since then, Lisa has gardened in eastern Oregon’s Wallowa Mountains and in central Virginia. She’s worked extensively with seed grower Edmund Frost at Twin Oaks Seeds, selecting and saving seeds on a commercial scale, and with Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, promoting seed-saving, organic seed production, and heirloom preservation.

Current Projects:

Lisa currently gardens with her family in California’s Bay Area, in the Community Garden of the UC Berkeley Village. She helps promote seed-saving and regional seed sources through the Bay Area Seed Interchange Library (BASIL) and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Her most important project is to teach her infant twin sons the joy of gardening and eating real, fresh food!
