Jason Akers – Going Beyond Organic and Sustainable
Name: Jason Akers
Occupation: Quality Manager in the Automotive Industry
Place of Residence: Murray, Kentucky
Background: Jason was taught how to homestead at an early age by his parents on their 80 acre farm near Louisville, KY. There he learned the skills necessary to garden and to raise livestock like rabbits, turkeys, chickens, cattle and hogs. He also learned to fish, hunt, trap and live off the land. In 2009 he created The Self-Sufficient Gardener Podcast to satisfy the demand for information about gardening “beyond organic”. The stated mission is “Helping People Garden Efficiently, Responsibly and Sustainably.” In 2010 to satisfy the lack of information on the web about other aspects of food production and harvest like fishing, hunting and raising livestock, Jason created The Hunt Gather Grow Eat Podcast. To date there have been over 150 episodes of these podcasts produced.
Recent Articles/Projects for MOTHER EARTH NEWS: I gave a presentation called “Composting: What You Need to Know” and ran the “Children’s Garden Workshop” at the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR in Seven Springs, PA.
Current Projects: Writing articles elaborating on the podcast topics and for various self-sufficiency magazines. Teaching my 3 year old to homestead.
