Harvey Ussery, Poultry Expert

Harvey Ussery and his wife, Ellen, produce much of their own food — and all of their MOTHER EARTH NEWS, maintains an informative website, The Modern Homestead, and is the author of The Small-Scale Poultry Flock (Chelsea Green, 2011).

Harvey’s goal for 30 years, working with dozens of heritage breeds of chickens, ducks, and geese, has been integrating his flocks into the total food production endeavor and making them more independent of purchased inputs. Starting in 2013, he has been raising Icelandic chickens exclusively as his ideal self-sufficient homestead flock, and breeding all of his own stock.
